In mid-2001, MGA Entertainment began producing a series of Bratz dolls. Their creator is Carter Bryant, a former designer for Mattel, the same company that created Barbie. He drew several sketches of sassy, bright-looking and "fashion-crazed" teenage girls.
Carter came to Isaac Larian, the company's executive director, with his idea. Larian was not impressed. But he decided to ask his daughter Jasmine about the sketch. The girl liked the doll.
His daughter's approval prompted Larian to start production
You either buy them all or none of them
But it took some time to get the new dolls on the market. The companies thought that only the blond-haired, blue-eyed Chloe would appeal to consumers.
But Larian was adamant. The dolls came as a set either they would promote all of them together or none. Subsequently, this became a Bratz feature, as it emphasized ethnic diversity.
There were at first 4 characters in the collection: Jade, Yasmin, Sasha, and Chloe
